TMCNet: Printronix Supports USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Code Initiative

[June 18, 2008]

Printronix Supports USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Code Initiative

(Wireless News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Printronix, an integrated supply-chain printing solutions manufacturer,
announced it supports the USPS Intelligent Mail bar code initiative
mandated for adoption by May 2009.

Printonix said customers deploying Printronix's P7000 series
line-matrix printers, L7032 laser as well as its T5000r and T4M thermal
bar-code printers will want this capability to receive discounts on
bulk mail services from the United States Postal Service.

"Printronix is integrating the Intelligent Mail bar codes into firmware
for our laser, line-matrix and thermal bar code series printers as a
standard feature. This will allow bulk mailers to print bar codes
directly from their Printronix printers, saving them time and money --
two commodities of our global economy," said David Sakai, senior vice
president, marketing, Printronix. "The Intelligent Mail bar code is the
result of the USPS' efforts to develop more robust codes capable of
encoding more information while minimizing the space used on mail
pieces."

The Intelligent Mail bar code (formerly known as the 4-State Customer
Barcode) is a USPS bar code technology used to sort and track letters
and flats. The Intelligent Mail bar code combines the data of the
existing Postnet and the Planet Code bar codes, as well as other data,

into one bar code. The Intelligent Mail bar code is a type of
height-modulated bar code that uses four distinct vertical bar types:
Full, Tracker, Ascender and Descender.

Printronix said it will support the Intelligent Mail bar code on four
product lines: P7000 line-matrix, T5000r thermal bar code, T4M radio
frequency identification (RFID)-ready thermal bar code and L7032 laser
printers. The manufacturing release will occur in fall 2008 for all the
supported product lines.
